John & Jeanne Nevins Family

John and Jeanne Nevins were a typical family raising six children in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They had known each other their whole lives, having met in grammar school. They both shared a strong Catholic upbring and education and they felt strongly about providing that for their children, sending all six of them to Bishop Kearney.

The Nevins children were involved in peer ministry during their years at Bishop Kearney, as well as basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball and cheerleading. John and Jeanne never missed one of their children’s games. They were involved in the Parents Club and the Sports Boosters, working on Homecoming floats and at the concession stand during games.

All six children graduated from Bishop Kearney and stayed connected with the school, primarily participating in a fundraising golf tournament for BK.

When John died in 2020, the Nevins Family was approached to take over the golf tournament in honor of John and create a scholarship fund in his name. Jeanne, Micheal ‘96, Matthew ‘97, Michelle ‘02, Meredith ‘06, Marissa ‘11 and Meghan ‘11 didn’t hesitate. They took over management of the tournament, soliciting donors, hole sponsors, dinner sponsors and players and growing the event. Over the past six years, The John Nevins Golf Tournament has raised a significant amount of money for the scholarship fund.

According to Michael, they will all continue to do whatever they can for Bishop Kearney. It is such a special place for all of them. They love the people and the culture of Bishop Kearney.

Michael said that their parents sacrificed and worked hard to put their six children through Bishop Kearney because they felt that would help guarantee their success and provide them with a better life. Michael said their parents could have had a lot more in life for themselves but they gave it all to their kids.

John and Jeanne would tell their kids that they wouldn’t change a thing about what they did for them and Michael and his siblings are so proud of their parents for their love and commitment to their family. Michael said his parents were right. BK did wonderful things for their family and they are honored and happy to give back to BK in honor of their parents.

The family all still  live close to each other in Irondequoit and Michael said with all six siblings, spouses and nine grandchildren in the mix, family gatherings are still full of chaos and love.
